Rural Households of Pará, BrazilSummary:Rural Households of Pará, Brazil contains a digital map
of rural households for the state of Pará in eastern Amazonia.
This dataset is based on annual statistics gathered in the Brazilian
National Health Foundation (Fundação Nacional de Saude)
rural population census.
Table of Contents:
1. Data Set OverviewData Set Identification:
Rural Households of Pará, Brazil
Data Set Introduction:
This dataset consists of a digital map of rural households attributed
by health statistics collected during annual Brazilian National
Health Foundation (Fundação Nacional de Saude) rural
population censuses. These data will be made available through
this homepage by June 30, 1998
Objective/Purpose:
These data were collected and prepared in the current format
to provide information about the distribution and concentrations
of rural households.
Summary of Parameters:
Rural Households of Pará, Brazil Future land-use patterns in Amazonia will depend, to a large extent, on the geographical distribution of the rural human population. Maps of deforestation show the cumulative effects of this rural population on forest cover, but do not provide information about the distribution and concentrations of rural households. The Rural Households dataset provides a digital map of rural households for the state of Pará, located in eastern Amazonia. The data provided in this map and its associated tables were manually entered into spreadsheet form from published volumes and applied to digital versions of hand-drawn maps of rural communities (see REFERENCES). The Brazilian National Health Foundation (Fundação Nacional de Saude, FNS) conducts a census of the rural population each year through its program to control malaria. As part of this census, hand-drawn maps are made, showing the location of every community, villa, and farm, and the number of people residing in each. Rural Households of Pará, Brazil contains a compilation of these health census data (see DATA DESCRIPTION: Data Characteristics: Variable Description/Definition, for a complete listing) applied to community maps of approximately 70% of the state of Pará, including forested regions lying within the drainage basins of the Tapajôs, Xingú, Trombetas, Parú, Amazônas, Anapú, Pará and Tocantins rivers. The areas excluded from this map are primarily those areas where there is very little primary forest cover remaining, such as the Bragantine Zone, east of Belem. Discussion:
